How to Get from Vientiane to Vang Vieng (Train, Bus, Van)

The Laos–China railway made Vang Vieng easy: about one hour from Vientiane. Prices, the 14-day booking window, and the honest arrival notes.

The train is the reason Vang Vieng got easy. The Laos–China railway connects Vientiane to Vang Vieng in about one hour (roughly ⭘238,000 second class) — and from Luang Prabang it's also about an hour; the town sits almost exactly in the middle of the northern line. It's fast and scenic, and it sells out: there's a 14-day advance booking window, at the station or via laostickets.com / Baolau. In high season (December–February) seats genuinely sell out — book the day the window opens.

Two honest notes about the train: the Vientiane station is 20–30 minutes outside the center, so budget a tuk-tuk ride (~100,000+ kip) on top of your train time. And arrival in Vang Vieng: the station is ~8 km west of town — tuk-tuks meet every arrival.

Buses and minivans are the cheap fallback: multiple daily departures (roughly 07:00–15:00), slower, adventure-grade comfort. Private vans offer hotel pickup, bookable via 12go.asia and agents — door to door for 3–4 people, worth it split four ways with luggage.

From Bangkok it's now possible almost entirely by rail, changing in Vientiane.

Once you're in town: the blue lagoons, viewpoints and river sunset bars are all a short tuk-tuk ride apart. Buy your lagoon 3 ticket online before you go — the QR arrives on your phone instantly and never expires: Blue Lagoon 3.

Prices are honest ballpark, checked 2026 — they move.
